Since 1st of January 2024, the Department of Science Communication and Higher Education Research has been integrated into the newly founded Department of Society, Knowledge and Politics.

Founded in 2007, the Department focuses on the social constitution of science in the broader German sense of Wissenschaft. Central themes are the interplay and boundaries between multiple practices and cultures of the social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences; the societal importance of universities as research and educational institutions; and the media-based communication of scientific knowledge. Research and teaching at the Department are grounded, above all, in expertise of the social sciences and humanities. In this way, the Department fosters a discipline-transcending dialogue between different social scientific and humanistic perspectives.

Das 2007 gegründete Institut fragt nach der gesellschaftlichen Verfasstheit von Wissenschaft. Zentrale Themen sind das Zusammenspiel und die Grenzen zwischen den vielfältigen Kulturen und Praktiken der Sozial-, Kultur- und Naturwissenschaften, die gesellschaftliche Bedeutung der Hochschulen als Forschungs- und Bildungseinrichtungen sowie die medial vermittelte Kommunikation wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse. Die Arbeit am Institut stützt sich vor allem auf die Expertise der Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaften. Damit wird am Institut ein disziplinenübergreifender Dialog zwischen den unterschiedlichen sozial- und kulturwissenschaftlichen Perspektiven befördert.
