Psychodynamics/Psychotherapy Lab
Profile
Psychotherapy research as a sub-discipline of clinical psychology deals with different processes of psychotherapeutic approaches as well as their effectiveness. The relevance of the psychotherapeutic process variables is shown in the context of the therapy outcome. Thus modern process research now frequently occurs in combination with outcome research under the name of process-outcome research, examining the concrete process variables in relation to the therapy result. The research team at the Department of Clinical Psychology, Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis investigates process outcomes based on a psychodynamic understanding and focuses primarily on mentalization and mentalization-based psychotherapy as well as processes that take place between psychotherapy sessions, so-called intersession experiences. A further focus of the Department of Clinical Psychology, Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis is the investigation of mental illnesses in old age, concentrating on depressive illnesses and anxiety disorders. Besides the frequency and the rate of new cases of mental disorders, current research projects are concerned with the development and review of specialized treatment options for older people.

Research topics
Mentalization
Mentalizing is the ability to interpret one’s own behavior or the behavior of other people by attributing mental states. Numerous studies have shown that limited mentalization capacity is associated with a wide variety of psychological difficulties. The goal of mentalization-based therapy (MBT) is the specific increase of mentalizing abilities and the associated symptom reduction. As a key capability of mental health, we investigate mentalization ability in different psychotherapeutic contexts and currently link it to the Control Mastery Theory of the San Francisco Psychotherapy Research Group (formerly Mount Zion Psychotherapy Research Group). This theory assumes that the human being has unconscious schemata that may be pathogenic and prevent the achievement of aspired goals (e.g. in psychotherapy). These unconscious schemata show up in the therapeutic interaction via different relationship tests (see below for more information). Our research team is currently investigating the relationship between these relationship tests and unconscious schemata and the patients‘ mentalization ability and the associated therapeutic outcome.
Inter-Session Experiences (IEQ)
Inter-Session Experiences describe the processing and internalization of the therapy and its contents between individual therapy sessions. This includes all spontaneous and intentional thoughts, feelings, memories and fantasies about the therapy and the therapist. While a large part of psychotherapy research focuses on the processes within a therapy session, this research area deals with the processes between therapy sessions. First studies show that these processes are significantly related to the therapeutic relationship and the success of a therapy. Our research group is currently investigating the connection between in-session experiences (processes within a therapy session) and inter-session experiences (processes between therapy sessions). Based on this, we are developing a smartphone app for the economical assessment and systematic monitoring of intersession experiences.
Control Mastery Theory (CMT)
By means of Control Mastery Theory (CMT), the role of more or less conscious relational testing is conceptualized; it is a treatment technique that dates back to Freud’s late psychoanalytic theory and describes a patient’s behaviour during psychoanalysis or psychoanalytic psychotherapy developed by Weiss, Sampson and the Mount Zion Psychotherapy Research Group in 1986.
The root of psychopathology, according to CMT, is subjective traumatic experiences from early childhood that lead to repressions and pathogenic beliefs that are usually bleak and limiting. A child may develop various pathogenic beliefs because of traumatic experiences with caregivers. As a result, every own wish, every need appears so dangerous to the child that its fulfilment could endanger the relationship with his or her parents. However, the parents are crucial to the child’s life, so it suppresses its needs and desires. Nevertheless, the person suffers from his or her pathogenic beliefs, for example, he or she feels ashamed, guilty, constricted or afraid. This suffering creates an unconscious desire to invalidate the pathogenic beliefs and leads the patient into psychotherapy.
It is assumed that when the patient feels safe there in the therapeutic relationship, he unconsciously puts the therapist to the test in order to be able to have corrective emotional experiences, so-called tests on the therapist. In this way the patient unconsciously wants to experience that other than the dysfunctional behaviour is also appropriate and after successfully repeated tests he can invalidate the pathogenic beliefs and experience and work on repressed contents.
Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT)
Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT) is a short-term psychodynamic therapy (16 sessions) with a focus on interpersonal difficulties, i.e. a repetitive, maladaptive relationship pattern under consideration of transfer and counter-transfer processes as well as defense mechanisms. This interpersonal, largely unconscious focus is directly linked to psychological symptoms (especially depression and anxiety symptoms). Its effectiveness was proven in a first study by the original authors. Current research projects focus on the effectiveness of DIT in the elderly and the identification of relationship tests in psychodynamic short-term therapies. Sylke Andreas and Caroline von Korff are currently in training as DIT trainers at the Anna-Freud-Centre in London (UK).
