Predoc Scientist

Level of employment: 100 % (40 hours/week)

Duties and responsibilities:
• Participation in research and teaching activities of the department, including interdisciplinary work
• Autonomous research aiming at submitting a doctoral dissertation within the employment period
• Participation in organisational and administrative matters relating to the department
• Participation in public relations activities of the Faculty of Technical Sciences

Required qualifications:
• Master’s degree from a domestic or foreign higher education institution in computer science or a related field
• Proven interest and experience in the field of Human-Computer Interaction (e.g., as the focus of the Master’s or Bachelor’s thesis or other students’ projects, pertinent work experience, etc.)
• Very good knowledge of spoken and written English as well as good knowledge of German or willingness to redress weaknesses within the first year of employment

Additional desired qualifications:
• Pertinent experience abroad or in practice
• Teaching experience and didactic competence
• First scientific publication(s)
• Good programming skills in two or more among C/C++, Python, Java, Android, and Unity
• Experience with statistical methods
• Social skills in diversity and equality issues

The Interactive Systems Research Group teaches theoretical and practical knowledge and skills needed to design, implement, and evaluate digital products and to create innovative interactive solutions for the future. The group’s research activities concern the usability and user experience of standard and novel user interfaces and modalities, which lead to new challenges, especially in connection with the advance of AI. Current research aims to understand and improve interaction in desktop and wearable-based usage scenarios, virtual and augmented reality, and smart environments (IoT, Smart Home). We work in a committed, collegial, and international team at the University of Klagenfurt and cooperate with national and international partners from science and industry.

This position offers an excellent opportunity for a dynamic junior researcher interested in engaging in Human-Computer Interaction. It serves the purposes of the vocational and scientific education of graduates
of Master’s programmes and sets the goal of completing a Doctoral degree (PhD) in Technical Sciences. Therefore, applications by persons with a pertinent doctorate (PhD) will not be considered.

Startup „Markets Flare“ Funded by »vor.GRÜNDEN 2024« Project

Following the successful pitch by the startup founders, the »vor.GRÜNDEN 2024« project submitted by the University of Klagenfurt was approved by the KWF Board of Trustees. The funding covers the costs for the pre-commercial development of three startups over a period of nine months. The startup „Markets Flare“ by Andrii Ivanov and Amirreza Badpa is hosted by the Department of Economics / QED with Prof. Martin Wagner providing scientific supervision. The aim is developing an app / web solution to retrieve and process complex financial data using taylor-made learning algorithms. For more information see the description below. Executive Summary

Markets Flare is a solution that gives real time access to complex financial data with a particular focus on a user-friendly interface, thereby providing access to financial data also novices. Markets Flare is based on recent advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning that allow it to transform raw data into insightful, easy-to-understand, and manageable information. The underlying basis of the Markets Flare decision support system is the iterative application of tailor-made learning algorithms to financial information retrieval and processing. The focus on a user-friendly interface supports not only professionals in strategy development, but also helps novices to retrieve financial information without the steep learning curve traditionally associated with using financial information systems. The retrieved information is seamlessly combined with numerous financial models that are provided in the Reporting Assistant tool; one of the six integral tools of Markets Flare described below. 30 Years of Summer School Bovec: A Jubilee of Multilingualism

The Summer School Bovec, organised by the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt in cooperation with six universities from four countries, has good reason to celebrate: This cross-border education initiative centred in the Alps-Adriatic region was first held 30 years ago. The celebration bore the motto „Bovec as a future space“ and partner universities, graduates and numerous guests of honour came together to mark the 30th anniversary.
