- UNIVERSITY SPORTS INSTITUTE
“The sky is the limit”
Elite athletes continue to push the boundaries of performance and set new records. Record-breaking athletes are not only distinguished by their exceptional physical attributes but also by great mental strength and the ability to perfectly harness their full potential at the right moment. However, psychological aspects are important not only in elite sports. In fact, in both health and recreational sports, mental components such as motivation, perseverance, and the proper management of one’s expectations also play a crucial role. The Sports Psychology Project (U.2.10) serves as a contact point for issues related to the mental aspect of sports, providing scientifically grounded sports psychological support. The range of services is diverse and addresses the following areas:
Sports Psychological Counseling and Training

- “What are the best ways to implement training performance in competition?”
- “How can sport-specific concentration be improved?”
or
- “Is there a formula for better self-confidence?”
Interested athletes can take advantage of individual counseling, personalized mental training, and comprehensive sports psychological diagnostics. Professional support and counseling are also offered for dealing with sports injuries, psychosocial issues, and general emotional crises. There is close collaboration with the Institute of Sports Medicine of Carinthia and the Carinthian Olympic Center.

Career Counseling
Engagement in high-performance sports is often difficult to reconcile with long-term career planning. The Sports Psychology project offers support in this regard. The core element of this is the Spitzensport & Studium project, which enables education-driven elite athletes to combine high-performance sports and university studies through a personalized mentoring system.
Collaboration with University Facilities – Services for Students
Due to the location of the “Sports Psychology Project” at the University Sports Institute, there is a strong collaboration with various departments of the university, enabling positive synergy effects. The Department of Health Psychology regularly offers courses with sports psychology content. Interested students also have the opportunity to participate in relevant projects and gain practical experience. In the context of Bachelor’s and Master’s theses that involve sports psychology topics, students from various fields of study (psychology, business administration, media & communications) can receive scientific advisory consultations.
Information Services
The goal is to inform about sports psychology and sports science-related topics and to foster continuous exchange through various offerings.
- Regular events with a sports psychology focus
- Organization of scientifically-oriented relevant training sessions, such as the most recent symposium “Future Challenges in Sports: Sports at the Limit“
