STEOP: the Introductory and Orientation Period
All students pursuing a Bachelor’s degree programme start their studies with an Introductory and Orientation Period (Studieneingangs- und Orientierungsphase/StEOP). Students of the Bachelor’s degree programme in Psychology and students attending their programme of study as incoming students in the context of a mobility programme are exempt from the Introductory and Orientation Period.
The Introductory and Orientation Period aims to provide an overview of the essential content of the degree programme and its further course. It also aims to create an objective basis for coming to an informed decision regarding the assessment of the suitability of the individual choice of the degree programme.
FAQs
StEOP: What is this?
At the beginning of your degree programme, you must successfully complete the Introductory and Orientation Period (Studieneingangs- und Orientierungsphase/StEOP). Successful completion of the Introductory and Orientation Period entitles you to take further courses required in the degree programme.
Before the completion of the Introductory and Orientation Period, it is possible to antedate exams that lie beyond the scope of the Introductory and Orientation Period up to a value of 22 ECTS credits.
The Introductory and Orientation Period consists of a number of courses, all of which are specified in the relevant curriculum (study plan). Information on the scope and the individual courses of the Introductory and Orientation Period can be found in the respective curriculum.
Where can I check my status regarding the Introductory and Orientation Period?
The status on your online student profile will read “StEOP abzulegen” (i.e. Introductory and Orientation Period still to be completed). After completing the Introductory and Orientation Period, your status will change to “StEOP abgelegt” (i.e. Introductory and Orientation Period completed).
Which rights do I have if I have not yet successfully completed the Introductory and Orientation Period?
It applies to all degree programmes with an Introductory and Orientation Period pursuant to Section 66 Paragraph 1 of the Austrian Universities Act that, pursuant to Section 14 Paragraph 7 Statute Part B of the University of Klagenfurt, courses up to a value of 22 ECTS credits, that lie beyond the scope of the Introductory and Orientation Period, may be taken prior to the completion of the Introductory and Orientation Period.
To prevent delays in the continuation of the degree programme due to the pending completion of the Introductory and Orientation Period, it is strongly advised to complete the courses of the Introductory and Orientation Period within the first semester.
How often can I take an examination for a course which is part of the Introductory and Orientation Period?
It is possible to resit examinations which are part of the Introductory and Orientation Period three times. If an examination which is part of the Introductory and Orientation Period is marked negatively at the last possible resit (= fourth attempt), admission to the respective degree programme will expire. The degree programme is terminated officially and can no longer be taken up at the University of Klagenfurt. If the requirements are met, other degree programmes can still be taken up at the University of Klagenfurt, as long as the course due to which the degree programme was terminated is not part of the required academic performance. Further, students can opt to take up the same degree programme (with the exception of teacher education programmes within the network) at another university in Austria.
What do I have to do if I have successfully completed my Introductory and Orientation Period?
If you have successfully passed all examinations required for your Introductory and Orientation Period, your status will be set automatically to “StEOP abgelegt” (i.e. Introductory and Orientation Period completed). You can view this status on your online student profile.
After the status change, you can participate in all courses and examinations beyond the Introductory and Orientation Period connected to your degree programme, provided that you fulfil the registration criteria stipulated in the respective curriculum or, respectively, in the course planner.
If examinations from another programme of study have been recognised for your Introductory and Orientation Period and if you fulfil all stipulated achievements of the Introductory and Orientation Period, yet the status is not automatically updated on your online student profile, please contact the Admissions and Examinations Office (studienabteilung [at] aau [dot] at)
Where can I read up on the legal regulations concerning the Introductory and Orientation Period?
The regulations relating to the Introductory and Orientation Period are set out in Section 66 of the Austrian Universities Act 2002 (German only) as well as in Section 14 Paragraph 7 Statute Part B of the University of Klagenfurt and in the respective curriculum.
