Examination Activity

As a student, you can also help shape the framework conditions for your studies by being an active student.

The level of our students’ examination activity in regular degree programmes constitutes an important indicator for calculating the university’s budget. This means, by being an active student you also help to shape university funding.

By maintaining your exam activity level, you play an important role in the negotiation and shaping of the university’s budget. Negotiating a more generous budget allows us to create an even better framework for your studies. This affects both the supervision offered to students during their studies and the range and depth of the courses taught.

Students in Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Diploma degree programmes are considered to be active students respectively “prüfungsaktiv” if they complete a minimum of 16 ECTS credits or pass grades amounting to a minimum of eight semester hours per registered degree programme in one academic year. Each degree programme is taken into account separately. Examinations and grades from different degree programmes are not added up.

When are you considered to have an active exam record?

Students who achieve at least 16 ECTS credits or pass grades amounting to 8 semester hours per registered degree programme in one academic year are considered as having an active exam record.

What is the difference between the minimum academic performance and the examination activity?

Minimum Academic Performance

Anyone admitted to a Bachelor’s degree programme from the winter semester 2022/23 onwards is obliged to complete 16 ECTS credits within the first four semesters following admission. Failure to achieve the minimum academic performance within four semesters will result in the expiry of admission to the degree programme concerned.
Students who were admitted to a Bachelor’s degree programme before the winter semester 2022/23 don’t face consequences on the part of the university, if they don’t achieve the minimum academic performance.

Examination Activity

Students who actively take exams are essential for the calculation of the university budget. Higher numbers of active students mean that the university has more financial resources available for teaching and research and that the study conditions can be better designed.

Students must also provide proof of a certain number of positively completed academic achievements per academic year to obtain scholarships for academic excellence, Studienbeihilfe grants and family allowance.

Will I be excluded from the degree programme if I don’t maintain an active exam record?

Examination activity is not compulsory. However, students admitted to a Bachelor’s degree programme from WS 2022/23 onwards must achieve the minimum academic performance.

What can students do?

There are many different reasons why students are (temporarily) unable to take courses or to actively participate in examinations. Students who are temporarily unable to actively pursue their studies are entitled to take a leave of absence from their studies for up to two semesters under certain conditions.

Is the examination activity relevant for admission to courses?

No. Examination activity is not taken into account when selecting students for admission to courses.

What is the difference between your academic record and examination activity?

Your academic record includes all the academic achievements you have obtained in exams and courses (since the start of your studies). If these performances are assigned to the individual modules in the examination book, this reveals your academic progress.

Examination activity is an important indicator in the area of university financing and, by contrast, only ever relates to one academic year. In order to qualify as an active exam taker, you must achieve 16 ECTS credits (or 8 semester hours) in one academic year.

I am enrolled in several degree programmes at the same time. How does the examination activity work in this case?

Examination activity is recorded separately per academic year for each degree programme. This also means, for example, that you can actively take exams in one degree programme (at least 16 ECTS per academic year) and not in another (less than 16 ECTS).

I cannot yet / can no longer see the ECTS I have earned in the exam activity chart. What could be the reason?

Once you have passed an exam and both the grade and ECTS credits have been awarded, the examination activity should also reflect this.

At the start of a new academic year, the examination activity is reset and recorded anew from that point onwards. It may therefore take a few additional days in the new academic year (or your first exam results) before the examination activity appears.
