The Faculty of Social Sciences (SoWi) was created at the beginning of 2023 from departments of the former Faculty of Humanities (Psychology, Media and Communications Science), the Faculty of Management and Economics (Geography, Sociology) and the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies (Technology and Science Studies, Science Communication and Higher Education Research). Even though the faculty is young, it brings together well-established departments which provide excellent research and teaching in line with the Humboldtian university ideal.
In teaching, the Bachelor’s degree programmes in Psychology and Media and Communications are among the University of Klagenfurt’s most popular degree programmes in terms of both student numbers and examination activity. The Bachelor’s degree programme in Geography and the teaching subject Geography and Economics are also offered by the SoWi. The Master’s programme “Science, Technology and Society Studies” is one of the few German-language programmes in this field and part of the international Master’s programme of the European Inter-University Association on Society, Science and Technology (ESST), which is coordinated at Maastricht University.
