Multiple Perspectives in Optimization
Complex optimization problems are our constant companions in daily life. Modern mathematical methods of modelling, analysis, and simulation are therefore necessary to support decision-making. This involves discrete, continuous and stochastic aspects – often in combination. The key to analysing and ultimately solving these problems lies in transcending the boundaries of individual mathematical disciplines and harnessing the innovative potential that this creates. The area of research strength known as “Multiple Perspectives in Optimization” (MPOpt) is dedicated to this thematic remit. It is primarily driven by the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Statistics.
The thematic doctoral programme “Modeling – Analysis – Optimization of discrete, continuous, and stochastic systems” at the University of Klagenfurt is one example of this interdisciplinary cooperation. Part of this programme is the doc.funds doctoral school bearing the same name, which is funded by the Austrian Science Fund FWF and the University of Klagenfurt. The aim is to equip doctoral students with the necessary mathematical knowledge to solve challenging research questions and to prepare them for an academic career in the best possible way.
The scientists working in this area of research strength are partners in numerous international projects, cooperating with highly renowned universities such as the University of Oxford, the University of California (Los Angeles) and the University of California (San Diego), the Technical University of Munich, Uppsala University, the Academia Sinica Taipei, the Sapienza Università di Roma and Purdue University.
Research efforts are focused not only on mathematical and statistical principles, but also on concrete practical cases in collaboration with numerous partners from the twin spheres of academic and industrial research. Examples include parameter identification and uncertainty quantification in systems biology (cooperation with the Institute of Computational Biology at Helmholtz Centre in Munich), degradation models for power semiconductors (cooperation with K-AI and Infineon), process control, quality improvement and design of new technologies in semiconductor manufacturing (NIACJU project Enabling power technologies on 300mm wafers EPT300), terahertz imaging (cooperation with CTR Villach), efficient implementation of public key cryptography (cooperation with Technikon Villach) as well as the development of exact methods and heuristics for the dynamic vehicle routing problem (cooperation with Satalia NPComplete Ltd. , London).
The area of research strength is broadly positioned within the university. For instance, collaborative projects with colleagues from the Institutes of Networked and Embedded Systems and Intelligent Systems Technologies are being pursued in the Autonomous and Connected Sensor System Lab within the framework of Silicon Austria Labs (SAL).
