Study
At Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt, there are several ways of studying mathematics. Our standalone degree programmes in mathematics are:
- Bachelor’s programme in Technical Mathematics or Master’s programme in Mathematics,
- Bachelor’s or Master’s programmes in teaching mathematics.
- A doctoral programme with dissertation element on technical mathematics or the didactics of mathematics.
Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes
“Technical Mathematics” respectively “Mathematics”
Students on the Bachelor’s in Technical Mathematics (6 semesters, 180 ECTS) are taught the basic principles of mathematics and practice-oriented and practice-based methods. The Master’s programm in Mathematics (4 semesters, 120 ECTS, English) builds on the Bachelor’s in (Technical) Mathematics and deepens students’ knowledge and understanding of (applied) mathematics and statistics. These research-informed degree programmes provide students with the skills they need to pursue careers in technology, management and business, as well as in scientific work and research.
“Bachelor and Master of Education – Mathematics”
On the Bachelor’s in Secondary-Level Maths Education (8 semesters, 240 ECTS), students study aspects of mathematics theory, didactics and teaching, as well as modules in the key principles of educational science that are taken by all students on a teacher training programme at the university. The Mathematics Education programme aims to provide students with solid vocational and research-oriented training in the key mathematical and didactic skills required for a career in teaching. Students on the Bachelor’s in Education must take a combination of subjects. This means that they must either take two subjects or one subject and the Inclusive Pedagogy specialist module.
After completing the bachelor’s teacher training programme, there are two options for completing the master’s programme:
- Completion of the Master’s programme in the form of full-time study or employment at a secondary school and
- in-service completion of the Master’s programme in Secondary General Education.
Doctoral programmes
Students can also take a doctoral programme at Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt if they meet the entry requirements. In particular, within the framework of the Doctorate in Technical Sciences (Dr. techn.), the dissertation element on technical mathematics is available, and within the framework of the Doctorate in Natural Sciences (Dr. rer. nat.), the dissertation element on the didactics of mathematics is available.
In the context of the doctoral programme, it should also be mentioned that this has a significant research element and is designed to be guided by individual interests (e.g. by means of tailor-made specialist courses).
The Departments of Mathematics and Statistics host the thematic doctoral programme “Modeling – Analysis – Optimization of discrete, continuous, and stochastic systems“.
