Professional language testing has for some time played an important role in Austria as well as in all countries of the EU. There are many institutions and government bodies dependent on decision deriving from standardized test, including professional organizations, agencies dealing with immigration, and higher education institutions. However, unlike many other fields, such as IT or medicine, in which there is  an established set of external quality assurance organizations, high-stakes language testing in Austria still does not have an independent instance which could impartially attest as to the validity of many important decisions taken based on language test scores outside of the educational context. The Language Testing Centre aims to bring together a set of assessment language experts under an academic umbrella in order to foster research into the various aspects of language tests.
