Die Tagung möchte sich gezielt dem hybriden Phänomen des religiösen Theaters des 16. Jahrhunderts widmen. Es interessieren Spiele und Dramen, die mit „mittelalterlichen“ und mit „neuzeitlichen“ oder an die Antike angelehnten Formen arbeiten. Gezeigt werden soll, wie die Spiele dieser Fugenzeit gezielt theatrale und rhetorische oder literarische Formen auswählen, um ihre konfessionelle Aussage zu unterstreichen. Dies reicht vom geschickten Einsatz der großflächigen Simultanbühne oder der kleinflächigen Sukzessionsbühne über die Integration von Tänzen, Prozessionen oder Ritualen bis hin zu rhetorisch ausgefeilten Reden oder in den Text integrierten Predigten. Die Einteilung in Akte mit Chorliedern, die Strukturierung in Haupt- und Parallelhandlung oder die meist symbolische Verteilung des Spiels auf mehrere Spieltage zeugen von einer sehr gezielten Auswahl theatraler Formen durch die Dramatiker und/oder Spielleiter.
