Klagenfurt-based researcher Samira Hayat is one of the 10 “Rising Stars in Computer Networking and Communications”
Samira Hayat is currently a member of the Lakeside Labs GmbH research team. Hayat completed her doctorate at the University of Klagenfurt and has contributed to numerous research projects aimed at the ongoing development of drones as well as the use of 5G networks for drone networks. Samira Hayat is the first researcher based in Austria to make it onto the prestigious list of “Rising Stars in Computer Networking and Communications”.
Samira Hayat was born in Pakistan. In 2012, she came to the University of Klagenfurt from the city of Trento in order to begin her doctoral studies in the Mobile Systems Group at the Institute of Networked and Embedded Systems. Her thesis focused on the advancement of multi-drone networks used in search and rescue missions. The paper “Survey on UAV networks for civil applications: A communications viewpoint” co-authored with Evsen Yanmaz and Raheeb Muzaffar in the context of her doctoral studies, has already been cited more than 1,000 times. After completing her thesis, she worked in the research field “5G and drones” as a postdoctoral researcher.
In 2018, Samira Hayat started her own business in this area. “I am interested in new and innovative use cases involving problems that can be solved with the use of drones. In this context, I am particularly fascinated by drone networks, including those that can master tasks in a self-organised way.” Her research also focuses on the social impacts that are associated with the use of new technologies. These days, Samira Hayat conducts research at Lakeside Labs GmbH in Klagenfurt.
The list of “Rising Stars in Computer Networking and Communications” is published today at https://n2women.comsoc.org/awards/rising-stars/. The selection is made by the N²Women network, a community of women researchers in the field of “Networking and Communications”. The “Rising Stars” usually comprise young female researchers from the most prestigious US universities. Samira Hayat is the first female researcher based in Austria to join the ranks of the 10 rising stars.
