Hidden spots around Lake Wörthersee: they do exist!
Find out where you can relax on the shores of Lake Wörthersee in the summer without spending a lot of money and without crowds of tourists.
Looking for a free place to swim?
Located right on Friedelstrand between the wharf and the Albatros rowing club: Tucked away behind a hedge is a stretch of grass measuring 148 square metres; a floating jetty provides easy access to the lake. For cyclists, runners and skaters, it’s a refreshing alternative for a short dip in the azure waters.
The Koschat Park in Krumpendorf also offers direct access to the lake: Although swimming in this area is officially prohibited, daredevils can use a small gap to reach the water – a popular route.
There are two bathing spots in Pörtschach. Located directly on the main road is the Edelweißbad, a protected stretch of shore that has been made available by the Federal Forest agency for many years. There are some basic facilities here, but hardly any parking spaces for cars.
Here’s an insider’s tip for those who want to go for a quick dip in the cool water to cool off while taking a bike ride along the north shore: In Pörtschach-Pritschitz there is a narrow bathing strip with a jetty, in a very idyllic location just below the railway line. We definitely recommend that you visit this area by bike or on foot. A few hundred metres further on, there is the Sallach open-air lido, which is also free of charge and offers a sunbathing lawn, a small jetty, toilet facilities and a great little café, ideal for a sundowner after your swim.
Tramway – experience nostalgia and railway history
Not far from the university and on the route heading towards Lendspitz, a historic tram carriage has been converted into a café. For many years, this traditional snack bar right on the Lend has offered snacks and drinks to go and invited guests to linger in its charming little garden. Sitting close to Klagenfurt’s eastern bay, time seems to slip away. We reflect, reminisce about the past and go home content.
Schamandra – a pleasant place with a (reportedly) misanthropic proprietor
Schamandra on the Strandweg in Krumpendorf is often described as the nicest place on Lake Wörthersee. The place is cosy and you can sit right by the water. You can also rent a pedal boat. There are no limits to romance in this venue. Minimalist with a modest menu and a little bit quirky.
Süduferstraße – hotspot für teenies
If you want to play it really cool, you can plunge into the (deep) water from a vine-like rope suspended over the steep bank on the southern shore between Reifnitz and Sekirn. Or simply watch others as they perform belly flops while you enjoy a snack in the nicely situated parking bay.
Maria Wörth – venturing off the main road is well worth it
Maria Wörth perches on the shores of Lake Wörthersee like a tiny island. Many simply cycle past it on their bike tours. It’s a pity, as the sunbathing lawn next to the pier is excellent, and even offers deckchairs. There’ s ice-cream too – what more could your heart desire? Culture buffs can use the chance to explore one of the two impressive churches.
