Linh Ngoc Dao

From Vietnam to Klagenfurt: Pursuing Excellence in Data Science

Born and raised in the capital of Vietnam, Linh Ngoc Dao – student at the University of Klagenfurt – shares her journey from the heart of Southeast Asia to the serene landscapes of Carinthia. Her story reflects her passion for economics, and an unwavering commitment to making a difference through data science.

Her academic path began in her hometown Hanoi, where she passed the university entrance exam. She enrolled at the Banking Academy, a public institution governed by the State Bank of Vietnam. Following her family’s footsteps into banking, she started her studies with a focus on economics and mathematics. However, her academic journey took a new direction during her second year, when she embarked on an exchange programme at HWR Berlin. There, her fascination with economics deepened, setting the stage for her future endeavours.

Finding Passion in Economics

At HWR Berlin, a course in Macroeconomics, taught by Alessandro Bramucci, ignited Linh’s passion for this field. The theories and mathematical models she encountered provided her with a new lens to understand the world. “The ideology of preceding scholars, in the form of theories and mathematical models, provided my 19-year-old self a way to make sense of the world and, with that, courage to retake control of my life”, she emphasizes. Excelling in Bramucci’s class, she began to consider academia as a potential career path. Determined to prepare for higher education in economics, she immersed herself in every available economics course, both at HWR and upon her return to Vietnam’s Banking Academy. Her academic path led her to participate in research projects that examined Vietnamese banks’ credit growth and the nation’s public budget deficit. Leading a team project in 2020, Linh explored the capital mobilization operations of a Vietnamese commercial bank. These experiences sharpened the student’s realization of the critical role data plays in economic decision-making, sparking her interest in pursuing an interdisciplinary approach to economics, management, and data science.

Choosing the MEDs Programme

The time came to choose a university for her Master’s degree and returning to the European Union was beyond a doubt. Linh was particularly impressed by the interdisciplinary approach of the Master’s programme in Management, Economics, and Data Science (MEDs) at the University of Klagenfurt. The programme’s blend of economics, management, and computational applications promised to equip her with the tools necessary for a competitive career. “In the age when our pool of data is expanding at a pace never seen before, it is only rational to equip oneself with a collection of mathematical tools, algorithms and machine learning techniques to maximize the effectiveness of strategic planning”, she explains. The reputation of the Faculty of Management, Economics, and Law at Klagenfurt, especially the Departments of Economics, played a significant role in her decision, which she explains in more detail: “I was excited to learn that the faculty members do not only demonstrate seniority, but also distinct accomplishments in their fields. In striving to become an outstanding economist and data scientist, I believe their insights, guidance and inspiration are justifiably needed.” Additionally, the city’s unique cultural intersection in the middle of the Alps made Klagenfurt an appealing place to live and study.

A Rich and Rewarding Experience

As a student in the MEDs programme, she has found a strong sense of camaraderie and mutual support among her peers to be one of the most appealing aspects of her studies. Despite being part of the first cohort, the students have built a tight-knit community that thrives on collaboration. Sharing courses with students from computer science and mathematics has further enriched this environment, fostering a culture of generosity and assistance. “This environment has been invaluable for navigating both academic and personal challenges, making the experience deeply rewarding”, she highlights. The programme’s flexibility has allowed her to tailor her studies to her interests, exploring diverse fields and integrating them into her academic journey. The option to choose between two majors—business or economics—or even pursue both tracks, adds a layer of personal relevance and professional versatility that she deeply values. Linh provides insights into everyday student life as well: “As a MEDs student, I’ve had the privilege of learning from inspiring figures like Paul Schweinzer, our programme director, and other high achieving members of other faculty, like Michaela Szölgyenyi. Their passion for their respective fields is contagious, and their expertise as well as achievement both serve as powerful motivators. Their enthusiasm and commitment to their work not only deepen my own interest but also set a high standard of excellence.” Emphasizing the excellent communication during her studies she adds: “The clear communication channels with the programme’s board ensure that our concerns are heard and addressed, further enhancing the supportive environment. This collaborative atmosphere not only makes the learning experience more enjoyable but also prepares us for real-world teamwork and problem-solving.”

New Perspective and Future Goals

Linh Ngoc Dao’s studies have profoundly altered her perspective on the world. She has learned to identify narratives and biases in data, becoming more critical and aware of the information surrounding her. The student’s training has fundamentally changed her approach to problem-solving, teaching her to break down complex issues into manageable pieces and solve them effectively. Looking ahead, Linh aims to work as a data analyst in the finance or technology industry, gaining practical experience before eventually returning to academia. She believes that the insights and skills she will acquire in these industries will enrich her academic work and enable her to contribute more effectively to research and teaching.

Balancing Academics and Extracurriculars

Despite the demands of her Master’s programme, Linh balances her academic responsibilities with a part-time job as an online test-prep teacher. This role not only helps manage her finances but also allows her to maintain connections with former students from her home country. The student’s schedule, which includes teaching a few classes each week, is carefully balanced with her studies, ensuring she can manage both effectively. In addition to work and study, it is also important to pursue hobbies, as Linh describes: “Reading provides me with a sense of escape and intellectual stimulation, while music helps me relax and recharge.”

Recommendation & Advice for New Students

For those considering the University of Klagenfurt, Linh offers a strong recommendation. “I would highly recommend the University of Klagenfurt for several reasons. The university’s commitment to interdisciplinary education in the MEDs programme is exceptional. It offers a rich blend of economics, management, and data science, preparing students comprehensively for various career paths. The faculty’s expertise and the programme’s flexibility stand out, providing an excellent environment for academic and professional growth”, she emphasizes. Moreover, Klagenfurt’s charming setting, near the picturesque Wörthersee, offers a unique combination of academic focus and outdoor enjoyment.

Linh’s advice to new students is to embrace the flexibility and inclusivity of the MEDs programme. “If you are passionate about integrating mathematical tools, statistical knowledge, and machine learning techniques into your work, and you enjoy collaborating with peers from diverse academic backgrounds, this programme is an excellent choice”, she says. For prospective international students Linh has the following advice: “It’s crucial to familiarize yourself with local regulations and university policies to navigate your studies more smoothly.“ In her mind, immersing oneself in the local culture and exploring the city will also enrich the overall experience, making the academic journey both rewarding and fulfilling.
