Celebrating ‘50 years of maths’ in Klagenfurt

The 50th anniversary of the scientific discipline of mathematics at the University of Klagenfurt will be celebrated this summer.  Since the establishment of the first two chairs in 1974 with a focus on the didactics of mathematics, three departments have been formed, which jointly invite you to the anniversary celebrations on the 25th of June 2024 with a Gauss Lecture, a competition, and an interactive exhibition.

Mathematics in quantum physics: Angelika Wiegele is currently researching and teaching at the University of Cologne

The mathematician was invited to contribute to the key profile area “Quantum Matter and Materials” at the University of Cologne as a member of the Global Faculty. There, she is working at the interface between mathematics and quantum physics.

Using mathematics and statistics to build a 3D image of a factory

The BMW Group production network comprises over 30 production sites worldwide. To date, there is no digital record of precisely where each machine is located or where a sprinkler system is suspended from the ceiling. As part of her doctoral thesis project, Christina Petschnigg headed to BMW in Munich to develop a methodology capable of implementing this digitalisation. She has now completed her doctoral studies and is putting her expertise to good use at Infineon in Villach.

Funding for 14 PhD students in the field of optimization in FWF doc.funds project

The approval of this project represents a milestone in the success story of the Departments of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Klagenfurt. It’s also a great achievement on the part of the participating professors and particularly for the 32-year-old coordinator, Michaela Szölgyenyi. Starting in October 2020, the project will employ ten young scientists (including eight women), with four more positions yet to be filled. The launch of the doc.funds doctoral school entitled “Modeling – Analysis – Optimization of discrete, continuous, and stochastic systems” will be celebrated on 27 October 2020 with an opening colloquium.
