Balance with sports

The University of Klagenfurt campus offers fantastic opportunities to stay active and try new sports at the University Sports Institute (USI). With 1,156 square metres of space, you can really let loose. Each year, there are 370 sports courses to choose from. Whether it’s sailing on the beautiful Wörthersee, ski-touring in the carinthian mountains, sports climbing, or stand-up paddling – there’s something for everyone. The USI features a modern weight room, a gym for workouts and gymnastics, a climbing wall, and an outdoor area with tennis and beach volleyball courts.

USI CAMPS

The USI camps are a particular favourite. You can learn many types of sport from scratch or hone your skills. In winter there are ski tours and snow shoe hikes, while summer offers bike camps in the Nockberge mountains, climbing camps in Istria and Italy, tennis camps, canyon-ing and kitesurfing in Grado. These camps are held in the most beautiful locations for the respective sport and promise unforgettable experiences.

ICY FUN

In the winter, the mercury drops to sub-zero temperatures and then it‘s time to put on your skates and glide over the ice, chasing the hockey puck along the Lendkanal. The Lendkanal is a four-kilometre long artificial waterway, which runs from Lake Wörthersee into the heart of Klagenfurt. But the very best ice skating can be found on Carinthia’s legendary Lake Weissensee. At 6.5 square kilometres, during the winter, it is the largest constantly frozen natural ice surface in Europe.

SPORTS ON AND AROUND THE LAKE

The ultra-modern USI building is just a few metres from the university. In the summer, USI Outdoor with its direct access to the Lendkanal is particularly attractive for fair-weather sporting pursuits. Just imagine: a university with its own lake access! Beach volleyball and tennis courts, SUP and kayaking are the absolute highlights. From here you can set off on wonderful SUP or paddle tours on Lake Wörthersee.

COMPETITIVE SPORTING EVENTS

Numerous students take part in competitive university sports and the University Games. From amateur to professional sports, we have everything. The Carinthian academic beach volleyball championships in the USI Outdoor area are hugely popular.

FUN IN THE SNOW

Come to Carinthia and you are guaranteed snow and above-average hours of sunshine. With 800 kilometres of prepared slopes in 23 ski areas, you can‘t fail to have fun. Sports enthusiasts join the guided ski tours organised by USI and enjoy the unspoilt landscape of the Carinthian mountains. Those who prefer to take things a bit easier can opt for snow shoes and hike up a mountain, around a lake or through a valley.
