Gender and equality
The Universities Act 2002 stipulates that equality between the sexes should be a guiding principle and an overall aim for every university. Measures to establish gender democracy include eliminating discrimination against and under-representation of women by offering targeted support, implementing gender mainstreaming and embedding Gender Studies in research and teaching across all programmes.
In the Advancement of women plan (Part E/I of the Statute), the university commits itself to providing an infrastructure that facilitates the achievement of these aims and creating a working environment in which the compatibility of family and career is recognised. The university’s responsibilities also include protecting staff from sexual and gender-based harassment in the workplace.
Research and teaching in Gender Studies also takes into account the interconnected nature of many facets of inequality.

The Equalities Working Group (AKG)
The Equalities Working Group is a collegial body at the university with the legal responsibility of tackling discrimination by university governing bodies based on
- gender,
- ethnicity,
- religion or belief,
- age or
- sexual orientation
and offering advice and support to members of the university and university governing bodies. The Equalities Working Group is also concerned with matters relating to the advancement of women (Section 42 Para. 1 Universities Act 2002 and Section 41 Para. 2 Federal Equal Opportunities Act). University Centre for Women’s Studies and Gender Studies
The University Centre for Women’s Studies and Gender Studies at the University of Klagenfurt is tasked with the following:
- supporting and coordinating gender-democratic teaching and designing and implementing programmes in Women’s and Gender Studies
- supporting and coordinating gender-democratic research and designing and implementing programmes in Women’s and Gender Studies
- offering grants in the field of gender-democratic education
- national and international co-operation projects and networking with women’s and gender equality organisations.
Family Services
Family Services is the facility that provides information and advice on how to better balance work, study and family responsibilities. Family Services is a drop-in centre for students and staff and provides information, advice and news about balancing family life and career, in addition to arranging childcare.
Uniqueer
Uniqueer is a group of queer faculty and university members and LGBTIQ* supporters at the University of Klagenfurt. We seek to promote the visibility of LGBTIQ* issues on campus and in Klagenfurt/Celovec and to support queer-oriented projects. Please visit our website to learn more about what we have been doing!
Austrian National Students’ Union (Union of Students)
Office for Women’s Affairs
The Office for Women’s Affairs is concerned with gender equality, dismantling discrimination structures and drawing attention to patriarchal patterns and systems. It organises events and projects to tackle prejudice and draw attention to gender stereotypes. The Office also represents the Austrian National Students’ Union in the university’s Equalities Working Group and assists with shaping university services relating to gender and equality.
LGBT Centre
The LGBT Centre is an advocate for diversity. We aim to promote the acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual and queer lifestyles by organising film nights, workshops, discussion sessions, parties and exhibitions and also provide students with information about external events that may be of interest.
