Research infrastructure
Top facilities for innovative ideas
In most of the academic disciplines represented at the University of Klagenfurt, the only tools needed for research are bright minds, computers, books and journals, paper and pencil, and opportunities for mutual exchange. Those fields that require additional infrastructure in order to study and measure phenomena and to experiment with novel approaches will find this at the University of Klagenfurt.
Drone Hall
Covering an area of up to 150 square metres and reaching a height of ten metres, the Drone Hall provides state-of-the-art research infrastructure for drone researchers at the University of Klagenfurt. This means a further boost for ‘Drone Hub Klagenfurt’, already one of the world’s most advanced facilities. The key to this research is this: It is essential to be able to detect and localise drones and their position as accurately as possible. Inside the Drone Hall at Lakeside Park, 37 high-precision cameras track every movement throughout the hall using infrared LEDs. The Drone Hall is also equipped with an HPC high-performance computer and a Spidercam featuring four winches and ropes.
The Karl Popper Archives
The Karl Popper Archives (KPA) manages the books, correspondence, manuscripts and other writings acquired from the philosopher’s estate in 1995, and makes them available for academic analysis. The archives comprise 205 volumes of bibliophile literature from the 15th to 19th century, including five incunabula, 49 aldines, 79 first editions, 744 editions of Popper’s own works both original and in translation, many specialist journals and 460 archive boxes containing copies of his manuscripts, offprints, letters and notes. In addition to Popper’s own works, the collection includes his entire library of scientific, fiction, children’s and expedition literature. Last but not least, there are the 91 microfilm rolls containing lectures, essays and further correspondence.
Technology Labs
The research groups based at the Faculty of Technical Sciences are equipped with a range of laboratory facilities. They include, among other things, an electronic test laboratory and a driving simulator. In addition, researchers have access to a hydraulic forestry crane with a motion tracking system and a simulation computer.
Psychology Labs
The Psychotherapeutic Research and Teaching Outpatient Clinic offers adults professional support and psychotherapy to help with mental health issues and illnesses. Particular emphasis is placed on the interconnection between psychotherapy research and practice in order to continuously improve the quality of treatment options for mental disorders and the training of prospective psychotherapists on the basis of the latest research findings. The Family and Health Lab has three laboratories. One of the laboratories is equipped with the latest video surveillance technology and provides a suitable environment for observational studies involving aspects of family psychology. The department also has specialist equipment for use in psychophysiological experiments.
Archives of Carinthian Literature
Established in 1993, the Archives of Carinthian Literature, part of the Robert Musil Institute for Literary Research, is responsible for the cataloguing and archiving of collections, pre-mortem bequests and literary estates.
