Policy
AAU’s Open Access Policy complements the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities and offers guidance on the following advisory, technical and financial matters.
- This policy focuses primarily on the interests and requirements of staff at AAU: researchers, particularly young researchers, and graduates.
- AAU offers its staff guidance on how to position their publications both in terms of traditional methods of publication and electronic publication. This therefore enables the university to fulfil its social responsibilities by offering free public access to its research publications.
- Provided that there are no legal or economic obstacles, the AAU enables its staff to make their publications and other relevant research findings available through open access (OA), either exclusively or in addition to traditional publications.
- AAU provides its staff with the infrastructure required for open access publication, whilst also taking into consideration issues of accessibility, usability and data security.
- After the embargo period has expired, staff at AAU are encouraged to make previously published work available on online repositories, known as the “Green OA route”, or to use the “Gold OA route” for a first publication.
- AAU provides its staff with relevant advice and information on matters relating to the organizational and legal aspects of OA. AAU also provides target-group-specific information on national and international developments in OA.
- Where there is a specific need, and where possible, AAU provides its staff with financial support for OA publication (publication fees, author fees, etc.).
Open Access Measures at the University of Klagenfurt
The scientific publication landscape is undergoing a major transformation process towards open access (OA). The University of Klagenfurt is responding proactively to this paradigm shift in scientific publication practice with a series of tailored support and promotion measures.
Publication agreements
The University of Klagenfurt has already entered into numerous publication agreements with various publishers, which allow our scientists to publish in the journals of these publishers at greatly reduced costs (APCs) or even free of charge. These measures are closely coordinated with other universities and research institutions in Austria through the organisation Kooperation E-Media Österreich (KEMÖ).
Repository and in-house journals
By establishing the netlibrary, the University Library has created an open access repository for articles that have been published open access. The netlibrary contains, among other things, the university’s open access journals and other open access publication series. The netlibrary complies with the European “Plan S” standards and is listed in the authoritative OpenDOAR database.
Funding opportunities
The University of Klagenfurt is a participant in the BMWBF-funded project Austrian Transition to Open Access (AT2OA). As part of this project, an Open Access Publication Fund has been set up at the University of Klagenfurt, which provides financial support for both OA journal articles and other OA publications by the university’s scientists (for more information, please refer to the online staff portal; information in German only). The publication fund is fully aligned with the quality standards of the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).
Besides the support provided by the publication fund, the university’s Research Council also funds open access publications, which have appeared in listed journals (SCI, SSCI or A&HCI).
