Teaching German abroad
Are you a trainee teacher who is interested in teaching abroad? There are many opportunities for Austrian teachers to work within the EU and further afield.
Placement abroad
German as a foreign language
The ‘German as a foreign language’ placement abroad is aimed at advanced students training to teach German as a foreign language. Students have the opportunity to gain 3 to 5 months’ experience of teaching German as a foreign language at a foreign university. Trainees receive a monthly grant from the BMWFW (Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy) of up to EUR 510 (depending on the local cost of living) plus a travel allowance and insurance.
Teaching fellowship programme
The teaching fellowship programme is a mobility programme for graduates of humanities and cultural studies programmes who hold a Master’s degree. The programme aims to teach and promote the German language, as well as Austrian literature and regional studies, at foreign universities and comprises a period abroad of up to five years.

Language assistantships
The language assistantships programme is aimed first and foremost at students studying to be secondary school teachers who have completed five semesters, as well as newly qualified teachers and qualified teachers. Language assistants teach at schools in Belgium, France, the UK, the Republic of Ireland, Italy, Croatia, the Netherlands, Russia and Spain for between 12 and 15 hours a week within the school’s German department. Becoming a language assistant will give you a first taste of teaching abroad. You will assist German teachers within their lessons and work closely together with them. The most important part of the language assistant’s role is to encourage them to speak German and to spark their interest in Austria. You will spend a full academic year working in a different school system, experiencing life in that country at first hand and thereby gaining a great deal of intercultural experience, which you will be able to use in your own teaching and lessons in Austria.
