Guide for Erasmus+ Student Mobility
You can find an overview of all the steps you need to take to study abroad in our English Erasmus+ Guide
INTERNATIONAL
The Erasmus+ programme enables students to study for up to 12 months per study cycle (Bachelor, Master, PhD) at a European university outside of Austria. The available respective spots are based on bilateral agreements, which are set up and overseen by the academic coordinators of the responsible departments.
All Erasmus+ students are exempt from tuition fees both at their home and their host university. Furthermore, each student is eligible to receive a grant to cover some expenses while living abroad.
The students on their own will gather information about insurance and visa aspects.
Application period:
Period abroad in winter semester, summer semester or whole study year:
15 January – 1 February
If you want to make use of your grant, you should at least be enrolled in the third semester of your field of study which can be counted towards your degree.
Erasmus+ student mobilities can basically be funded for 1 semester. Eligibility of funding presupposes a minimum stay of 2 months, funding can be granted for a maximum of 6 months.
Potential availability of funding will be evaluated corresponding to the budget (no automatic confirmation of an Erasmus+ grant possible). If no financial support is possible, “zero-grant” stays can be an alternative (= stay without financial support).
The grant is an additional allowance to defray some of the costs that arise from studying abroad. Please note that said grant will not cover all the living costs and can therefore not be regarded as a full scholarship.
Top-up of 250 Euro per month for persons with fewer opportunities:
* Students with a chronic illness, if it results in increased financial expenses during the stay abroad (compared to the stay in the sending country).
Short-term mobility: The duration of stay for short-term mobilities is 5 to 30 days, supplemented by a virtual component. Doctoral students also have the possibility of carrying out a short-term mobility without a virtual component. All mobility types can be completed in “blended” form – as physical stays combined with virtual components.
The application process begins online on the AAU campus system (Studierendenportal).
Recognition
When studying abroad in the Erasmus+ programme each student has to prepare a mandatory Learning Agreement (template and assistance for completing: cf end of page) which needs to be signed by both the coordinators of the home and host university and represents a prerecognition. The International Office is responsible for the formal revision of the Learning Agreement before students have it signed by the programme director (“Studienprogrammleitung”).
All Erasmus+ students must obtain 3 ECTS points per month for the duration of their studies within the programme. We recommend that students obtain 30 ECTS points in order to avoid problems in their programme of study.
If you are writing your Bachelor’s thesis, Master’s thesis, diploma thesis (Diplomarbeit) or PhD thesis you need to obtain a confirmation from your academic supervisor instead of a ECTS confirmation for each semester. *
Upon your return, you need to apply for recognition of examinations taken at the partner university.
*Please make an appointment at the International office if you intend to write a thesis during your Erasmus+ student mobility.
“I chose to go on an Erasmus+ exchange at the University of Marburg, Germany, mostly because I liked the courses they offered, and I also wanted to continue learning German (…). I experienced different education systems, got to know many new people from different parts of the world, and became more comfortable with living in a foreign country.”
The AAU is part of the Erasmus+ mobility programme and has implemented various measures.
