50 YEARS OF MATHS
50 Years of Maths
50 Years of Mathematics in Klagenfurt:
Outlook on the Anniversary in the summer of 2024
In 1974, the first two professorships for mathematics “with special emphasis on didactics” were established at the University of Klagenfurt. Half a century later, in the summer of 2024, the Department of Didactics of Mathematics, the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Statistics will jointly celebrate the 50th anniversary of mathematics as a scientific discipline at our university. Here is a preview of the planned program.
Big anniversary celebration with Gauss lecture
The highlight and kick-off of the celebrations is a ceremony on Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at 2 p.m. in HS4. For this special occasion, the “Gauss Lecture” of the German Mathematical Society (DMV) will take place at University of Klagenfurt — for the first time in Austria. The prize winner Prof. Dr. Monique Laurent (CWI Amsterdam and Tilburg University) will give a public lecture on current developments in mathematics. The DMV President Prof. Dr. Joachim Escher will open the event. And we are particularly pleased that Em. Univ.-Prof. Dr. Willi Dörfler will speak about “the beginning out of nothing”.
The ceremony and the “Gauss Lecture” were recorded and are available to be watched here.
“Mathematics is human science and natural science, knowledge and method from the very beginning, also and especially in Klagenfurt. And on this rests its significance and success, its fascination and importance, also and especially in Klagenfurt.”
Prof. Dr. Willibald Dörfler
Holder of the first chair for mathematics in Klagenfurt and later Rector
Exhibition: Grasping Mathematics
From July 1 to 4, 2024, the University of Klagenfurt invites you to visit the interactive exhibition “grasping mathematics” on campus where everyone gets the opportunity to experience and discover mathematics in a variety of ways. The exhibition is open to the public and, in particular, is aimed at students of all school levels and their teachers. A supporting program also offers visitors the opportunity to get to know the campus better.
Competition: Making Mathematics Visible
Furthermore, “50 Years of Mathematics in Klagenfurt” is accompanied by the competition “Making Mathematics Visible”. Students of all ages can participate with contributions that make mathematics visible in some form. Entries can come from individuals or groups. Creativity and interdisciplinary thinking are very welcome — the only important thing is that it illustrates a mathematical idea, e.g. in the form of a poster, a handicraft, a work of art, a video, a computer program, and similar.
The best submissions will be selected by a jury of experts and presented in the festive gallery as part of the exhibition “Grasping Mathematics”. The creators of the selected works will be invited to an award ceremony.
