Conference “Large Scale Experiments – Reflecting on Theories and Practices”

The second international conference of the interdisciplinary Research Unit “The Epistemology of the Large Hadron Collider” took place in Karlsruhe from December 8 to December 10. The conference brought together researchers from the sciences as well as from history, philosophy and social studies of science working in and on the theory and practice of large-scale experiments. Members of our department contributed to the conference in several roles: In her plenary talk “Complexity and organising practices in large-scale HEP collaborations”, Martina Merz presented joint work with Helene Sorgner. Daria Jadreškić and Helene Sorgner organized a symposium on “Creativity and constraints in large-scale collaboration” and also presented results from their ongoing work in the project “Producing Novelty & Securing Credibility in LHC Experiments”. Daria Jadreškić was also one of the co-organizers of the conference alongside Research Unit colleagues from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, University of Wuppertal, University of Bonn, RWTH Aachen, and the University of South Carolina. With 108 registered participants in-person and online, and 37 presentations in six symposia, six plenary talks, and two Contributed papers sessions, the conference was an extremely successful and inspiring final event of the six-year interdisciplinary work of the Research Unit.
