The research focus of HERUS is on transitions of urban systems towards sustainability. HERUS is an interdisciplinary team, consisting of social scientists and natural scientists. We combine social science methods with material and energy flow models, using ABM or SD and where appropriate machine learning techniques. A key aspect of our work relates to developing assessment methods for urban systems combining systemic and normative aspects. The research of the PhD student will focus on further developing these sustainability assessment methods. Thereby, the PhD student will combine qualitative and quantitative approaches to elicit and assess the sustainability of urban systems. Depending on the background a specialization in topics such as sustainable health, energy, or wellbeing is possible.

Your job

  • Full responsibility for your own research under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Claudia Binder and Dr. Stefanie Krauth, or other postdocs, depending on needs
  • Support to build-up the area of sustainability assessment of urban systems
  • Research in collaboration with the research team and potential city partners
  • Teaching (20%)

We expect

  • An excellent MSC degree, preferably in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, Geography, Natural Sciences, or other related fields
  • Knowledge of, and high interest in, interdisciplinary approaches and interest to employ methods from different fields such as social science and natural sciences
  • High interest in sustainability issues and the assessment thereof
  • Proficiency in English, strong team spirit, social skills, good communication, independence, and a high level of motivation for academic research motivated by relevant practical problems
  • French knowledge is an asset

We are offering a 75 – 100% Post-doctoral /senior scientist position on modelling transitions of urban systems at the Laboratory for Human-Environment Relations in Urban Systems (HERUS), ENAC, at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL) in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The research focus of HERUS is on transitions of urban systems towards sustainability. HERUS is an interdisciplinary team consisting of social scientists and natural scientists. The research of the post-doctoral fellow will focus on developing integrative models and scenarios for transitions of urban systems towards sustainability. The fellow will also contribute to building an ontology for characterizing urban systems as Social-Ecological Technological Systems (SETS), which provides the basis for the modelling endeavours and group collaboration.

Die EU-Kommission und die proatomaren Mitgliedstaaten sind auf vielfältige Weise aktiv, um die Atomwirtschaft am Leben zu erhalten. Um geradezu jeden Preis. Ein einziges Stichwort: die Bewilli-gung Brüssels für nie dagewesene Subventionen für das britische Atomprojekt Hinkley Point C, ein Präzedenzfall für sämtliche Atomvorhaben in den EU-Atomstaaten. Mit Österreichs Klage dagegen vor dem EuGH steuert die Atompolitik unseres Kontinents auf einen „High Noon“ zu.

Angesichts dessen sucht die Überparteiliche Salzburger Plattform gegen Atomgefahren (PLAGE, www.plage.cc – Motto seit 30 Jahren: „gewaltfrei – hartnäckig – aufsässig“) eine Fachkraft.zur Unterstützung der vielseitigen ehrenamtlichen Antiatomarbeit in der PLAGE. Insbesondere für den Bereich EU-Atompolitik / EURATOM. Die absehbaren finanziellen Ressourcen ermöglichen es, auf mindestens drei Jahre hinaus bis zu 25 Wochenstunden anzubieten (evtl. auch auf 3 Tage geblockt).

In Umkehrung der üblichen Alters-Präferenz halten wir durchaus auch nach älteren Bewerber/inne/n Ausschau. Entscheidend sind aber bisherige Tätigkeiten und unser Eindruck aus dem Vorstellungs-gespräch. Langjährige Erfahrung in atomkritischer Arbeit, zumal auch auf internationaler und speziell auf EU / EURATOM-Ebene sind in unseren Augen ein beträchtlicher Vorteil.

  • Sehr gute Sprachbeherrschung in Wort und Schrift (> Gesprächstermine

  • Sehr gute EDV-Anwenderkenntnisse, Erfahrung m. Web-Content-Management, Datenbanken.
  • Überparteiliches und bei Bedarf diplomatisches Handeln, bei durchaus prononciertem,

aber allseits offenem persönlichem Standpunkt.

  • Gesprächs- und Verhandlungsführung, Moderation.

-Nationale und internationale NGO-Kontakte/-Adreßdatei auf Stand halten.

-Fallweise ehrenamtliche Mitarbeiter/innen koordinieren.

–Spendenwerbung parallel zu Veranstaltungen und Kampagnen.

–Projekte managen, Partnerschaften & Kooperationen aufstellen und betreuen (auch grenzüberschreitend >>> ggf. EU-Förderungen einwerben u.ä.).
