Andrea Tonello received two awards from IEEE ComSoc TC-PLC

The IEEE Communications Society Technical Committee on Power Line Communications (TC-PLC) has honored Andrea Tonello’s activity with two prestigious awards: the 2019 Outstanding Service Award and the 2019 Interdisciplinary Research and Application Award.

The  Outstanding Service Award  is given in recognition of members of the Technical Committee on Power Line Communications (TC-PLC) who have a distinguished record of service to the PLC community. Such service includes initiation of and participation in technical and administrative activities that foster the development of PLC at large, leadership roles within the TC-PLC, organization of conferences and workshops, and promotion of TC-PLC activities and interests in the broader research community. Prof. Tonello received this award for his many years of exemplary leadership and service to the power line communications community, fostering the connection between academic research and industry activities and driving outreach and educational initiatives.

The Interdisciplinary Research and Application Award is given in recognition of members of the TC-PLC who have made significant technical and/or business contributions through inter-disciplinary research and application of PLC. Prof. Tonello received this award in recognition of his significant contributions to the characterization and modelling of power line signal propagation and noise.

The interests of the Technical Committee on Power Line Communications span all areas of communications over power lines (PLC), e.g., access, home networking, in-vehicle applications, utility applications, etc. The committee is one of the most active in the IEEE communication society with a large number of members. Prof. Tonello has been chair of the TC-PLC for two terms in 2014-15 and in 2016-17.

Andrea M. Tonello is Professor and Chair of the Embedded Communication Systems Group at the University of Klagenfurt. He received the Laurea degree (summa cum laude, 1996) and the Ph.D (2002) in electrical engineering from the University of Padova, Italy. From 1997 to 2002, he was with Bell Labs-Lucent Technologies, Whippany, NJ, USA, first as a Member of the Technical Staff. Then, he was promoted to Technical Manager and appointed to Managing Director of the Bell Labs Italy division. From 2003 to 2014 he was Aggregate Professor, and later Associate Professor, with the University of Udine, Italy, where he founded the Wireless and Power Line Communications Lab and the spin-of company WiTiKee. Andrea Tonello received several awards, including eight best paper awards, the Bell Labs Recognition of Excellence Award (1999), the Distinguished Visiting Fellowship from the Royal Academy of Engineering, U.K. (2010), the IEEE VTS Distinguished Lecturer Award (2011-2015), and the Italian Full Professor Habilitation (2013). In the area of wireless systems, power line communications, radio localization and smart grids, he published over 200 journal/conference papers, 1 book, 8 book chapters, and he holds 10 patents.
