Eternal Echoes

VeranstaltungsortV.1.03Veranstalter School of Education (SoE)BeschreibungDas transnationale Online-Unterrichtstool Eternal Echoes wird im Rahmen eines ERASMUS+ Projektes in 7 Partnerländern und ebenso vielen Landessprachen entwickelt. Es richtet sich an SchülerInnen von etwa 14-17 Jahren und gibt Einblick in historische Zusammenhänge, die schrittweise zum Holocaust geführt haben. Das Lehr- und Lernmaterial des Online-Tools basiert auf Video-Interviews mit Frauen und Männern aus verschiedenen Ländern, die den Holocaust überlebt haben. Ihre Geschichten erzählen vom jüdischen Leben und dem Leben der Roma vor und nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Die Schülerinnen und Schüler folgen den Erzählungen über Kindheit und Jugend, die Zeit in Gettos und Konzentrationslagern, die Befreiung und das Leben danach. Kontextbezogenes Hintergrundmaterial wird bereitgestellt. Das ICTHE Online-Tool wird Lehrenden in sieben Landessprachen kostenfrei zur Verfügung gestellt.Im Rahmen eines Workshops am 19.11.2019 wird Eternal Echoes Pädagoginnen und Pädagogen vorgestellt. Die Teilnehmer und Teilnehmerinnen erhalten einen Gesamteindruck über die Möglichkeiten der Lernplattform und haben Gelegenheit einzelne Tools zu testen und zu diskutieren.Vortragende(r)Dr. Angelika BrechelmacherMag. Solving partial differential equations with deep learning (doctoral seminar)

VeranstaltungsortN.2.01Veranstalter Institut für StatistikBeschreibungHigh-dimensional PDEs appear in many fields, such as physics, engineering and finance. Even though they are indispensable in many applications, their numerical solution has been a longlasting computational challenge. The feasibility of widely used finite difference methods is limited due to the "curse of dimensionality", i.e. discretizing the space-time dimension leads to an explosion of grid-points. In the last few years new techniques based on deep neural networks have gained popularity and were successfully used in many areas. Recently, the power of deep neural networks could also be extended to solve large classes of high-dimensional semilinear or nonlinear PDEs. One method makes use of the probabilistic representation of the corresponding PDE solution based on backward stochastic differential equations. In particular the gradient and the Hessian terms showing up in the BSDE are approximated with neural networks. Other methods for so-called "Kolmogorov equations" rely on the representation of PDEs as infinite dimensional stochastic optimization problems, that are spatially discretized by means of fully connected deep neural networks. In this talk, I will give an introduction to deep neural networks and discuss both methods. Quality of Experience – Measuring Quality from the End-User Perspective

This talk provides an introduction to the concept of QoE and its operationalization in subjective experiments. To this end we first review the origins of QoE as well as the most useful definitions and frameworks that map the main QoE constituents and use cases. In the second part we go about operationalizing QoE, with a focus on how to design and conduct subjective QoE experiments that provide valid and reliable results.CV: Dr. Raimund Schatz is Senior Scientist at the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, Center for Technology Experience, where he coordinates the Research Field "Experience Measurement". Furthermore, he is Post-Doctoral researcher at the ATHENA Christian-Doppler Laboratory (ITEC, AAU). Until 2015 he was Key Researcher and Area Manager at the Telecommunications Research Center Vienna, Department of User-centered Interaction, Services, and Systems Quality. Raimund Schatz holds an Msc. in Telematics (TU-Graz), a PhD in Informatics (TU-Vienna), as well as an MBA and an MSc. from Open University Business School (UK). He is (co-)author of more than 130 publications in the areas of Quality of Experience, Service Quality, HCI and Pervasive Computing. A specific obstacle problem for the three-dimensional model will be defined and a rigorous asymptotic analysis as the thickness approaches zero will be performed. We will finally compare the obtained result with what is obtained by letting the thickness approach zero in the corresponding Koiter’s model subjected to an obstacle.
