Gastvortrag: English-Medium Instruction: Taking Stock and Moving Forward
VeranstaltungsortonlineonlineVeranstalter Institut für Anglistik und AmerikanistikBeschreibungIn recent years, English-medium instruction (EMI) has become a rapidly growing educational phenomenon in universities in non-English-speaking countries. Among the key reasons for introducing EMI are: raised institutional visibility and prestige, enhanced international profile, improved rankings, increased international student enrollment, improved language proficiency, and strengthened competitiveness on the global education market. However, in the race to internationalize academia, concerns have been raised about the challenges associated with teaching academic subjects through English. Paradoxically, one of the major selling points of EMI – the English language – is also one of its weaknesses as the medium of instruction can have negative implications on students, teachers, and learning. In this presentation I will first provide a brief overview of the key aspects of EMI with respect to the current developments in internationalization of higher education. I will then examine the benefits and challenges of English as a medium of instruction and summarize the findings from a series of studies on EMI conducted in the Croatian context. Finally, I will look at the measures that can be taken to address these challenges, and offer some practical suggestions for the implementation of EMI.Zoom Link: https://zoom.us/j/2196051598?pwd=d1JCMDVRSzZjdFFHcHpZR3hnN1pJZz09Vortragende(r)Prof.Dr. Irena Vodopija-Krstanovic KontaktDaniela Werdnig (daniela.werdnig@aau.at)
