In particular Arthur will describe how poets use metaphor to make an appeal to the reader’s sympathetic imagination, and how metaphor invites readers to not only interpret a poem, but to actually participate in the collaborative creation of the poem’s meaning. Implicit in this line of discussion is the question of how to understand a poem, and also the question of what poetry is for. Throughout his talk Arthur will draw examples from other poets’ work and will also reflect upon the role of metaphor in his own artistic practice, explaining how a poem’s range of implication evolves during the process of composition, often in directions that the poet has not foreseen. Following his lecture on metaphor, Arthur will recite poems from his two collections, Charms Against Lightning (Copper Canyon Press 2012) and The Suicide’s Son (Véhicule Press 2019). VeranstaltungsortHS 3Veranstalter Institut für Geographie und RegionalforschungBeschreibungIn recent years there has been an increase in the number of foreign investors from Western, Asian and Gulf countries acquiring shares of agricultural land in Africa, mainly for the purpose of large-scale food and biofuel production for their home countries. For some, such investments are an opportunity for foreign direct investment and development in Africa. For others, such global land grab needs to be critically assessed for its impacts on the rural population because potential implications of such investments involve both opportunities and risks. However, there is still little empirical evidence of the actual implications of such international land deals.
